Yvette helps me raise £1,500 for BOS

BOS CLP put on another great social event recently, with Yvette Cooper the keynote speaker. It was a huge success with over £1,500 raised for the campaign war chest. I organised and hosted the evening at a pub overlooking Tower Bridge. I made it a point to encourage more campaigning and remind everyone that there are only a few weeks until polling day.

Val Shawcross shared her campaign acronym PERFECT – Police, EMA, Rents, Fares, Energy, Childcare and Trams – the key issues we’re fighting the Mayoral election on.

The Shadow Home Secretary, fresh from the House of Commons where she was fighting to protect our NHS, delivered a keynote speech praising the good work being done by Southwark Council on free school meals and improving council homes.

Thanks to our organising team looking beyond the usual pool of local supporters, the event attracted a wide range of guests including councillors from other boroughs, young labour activists from across London and many new people attending their first Labour event.

There were also some fantastic items on auction, including whisky bottles signed by Ed Miliband and Gordon Brown, a signed copy of Ed Balls’ maiden speech in the House of Commons, a legislation Act signed by Tony Blair and a bottle of wine signed by Chuka Umunna.

The event went so well thanks to excellent support from Sheila Taylor, Mary Doherty and Mary Foulkes who helped with raffle tickets and donations; the two James’s, James King and James Gill who looked after the doors; and Samir Sharma who conducted the auctions. Together they make a strong and diverse team, all bringing new ideas from their different backgrounds, and they’re a pleasure to work with.

Thanks also to Leonie Mathers, Yvette’s wonderful secretary, who helped make it happen.
