Congratulations Rebecca Lury

Congratulations to Rebecca Lury on winning the East Walworth ward by-election in Southwark. It was a close one. Just 256 votes separated her from Lib Dem candidate Ben Johnson, which goes to show how important all the hard work and campaigning was over the last few weeks. My goal was to help by doing 20 canvassing sessions for this by-election. Thanks to Darren Merrill’s encouragement, I ended up doing 21! I had a chance to campaign together with lots of councillors and activists, including Steve Lancaster, Kate Nash and Nicky Edwards.

The polling day effort kicked off at 5am and the door-knocking, leafleting and phoning didn’t stop until poll close at 10pm. It was extremely cold for me but the camaraderie of our councillors kept me going and it was lovely to settle down to a drink with Andy Simmons, Helen Hayes and Cleo Soanes at the end. I’ve got to hand it to Ali Craft and Robert Smeath for running a successful campaigning operation.
